Jamie Calder wins place in Optimist Worlds Team

Congratulations to Scotland's Jamie Calder who finished 5th in the GBR Optimist World Championships Team Selection Trials at Pwllheli last weekend and has been selected to attend the Optimist World Championships.  Jamie, aged 12 is only the 4th Scot ever to make the Worlds team, very well done Jamie!!

Seven Scottish Optimists were invited to compete in the 70 boat fleet. The objective of the GBR Selections, is to choose teams to represent GBR at the Optimist Worlds, Europeans, Pre-Worlds, and Flanders Youth Regatta. This event has been described as the most challenging event in UK Oppie racing. Participation is by invitation so it is a top class fleet, everyone is good, there are 4 to 5 races per day, scrutinised by RYA and the independent Selectors.
This year the trials comprised a 4 day regatta at Pwllheli, North Wales.  Conditions were uniformly windy until the last day. 14 races scheduled but only 5 completed. All five races therefore counted with no discard and consistency was the key.
Results – Jamie Calder finished 5th, GBR Worlds Squad, aged 12.  Alasdair Ireland finished 17th, in GBR squad for Flemish Youth Regatta. Well done Alasdair!
