One thing that you don't want is your mast waggling about in the mast gate wasting energy and knocking the flow of wind off your sails. Complex tricks have evolved using wraps of electrical tape over spacers like reclaimed plastic bottles to try and create mast chafe pads to fill the gap between the mast gate and the mast just above the collar.
